The Hill Center Travels to Athens Academy
The Hill Center visited Athens Academy to explore how to get Hill Center programs within their school to address the needs of their own students. They were also interested in the possibility of becoming a community resource by offering summer programs and hosting teacher training.
In October, two of our trainers, Jean Neville and Glynis Hill-Chandler traveled to Athens to present a one-day workshop on the topic of “Differentiated InstructionA Classroom Model for Meeting Individual Learning Needs”. Approximately forty teachers and administrators attended the workshop.

“A Hill Raising Good Time” Auction
The Hill Center held its 2nd annual auction on November 7th. It was a huge success and helped raise approximately $90,000 towards our annual fund.
HillMath
The Hill Math Achievement Program (HillMath) was piloted last fall as part of a multi-day series that included HillRAP and HillWrite. From that experience, we found that the interest in math remediation is so great, that we have been hard at work developing a stand-alone version of the training so that educators interested in teaching math only will be able to attend a two-day HillMath workshop without having to attend the current prerequisite of HillRAP. We will be piloting this two-day version this spring, March 31-April 1, which is funded by a generous gift from Duke Energy to train public school teachers.
New Training Facility Update
Our Kirby-Horton Teacher Training Facility is underway, and we are scheduled to complete the building by July. This new 16,000 sq. ft. facility will help realize The Hill Center’s strategic goal of serving diverse learners beyond our geographic reach through state-of-the-art learning technologies.
Hill Early Literacy Program (HELP)
The Hill Center has developed a preschool literacy program for three- and four-year olds. The program is research based and links what is known from research in early learning and literacy with classroom practices. It includes the basic building blocks children will need to be successful readers once they enter kindergarten. This program was piloted in Davie County for two years. Research from this pilot program showed significant gains in pre-literacy skills.
We have invited 33 preschool directors from the Duke Child Care Partnership to attend an information session on March 4th. A two-day HELP workshop for preschool teachers has been scheduled for May, as well as a one-day mentoring workshop. Teachers will attend the workshop through scholarships funded by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation and the Fox Family Foundation.
Scholarships Received from the Carolina Hurricanes (Our NHL Championship Hockey Team!)
The Carolina Hurricanes’ Kids ‘N Community Foundation is generously providing support for nine Durham third and fourth graders to receive HillRAP tutoring this year. The students will participate in tutoring after school at Southwest Elementary in Durham. We are excited to partner with the Hurricanes and know this tutoring opportunity will make a difference for these students.

REPLICATION SITE IN THE SPOTLIGHT
HillSprings Learning Center Affiliated Replication Site
The Professional Development Program at the HillSprings Learning Center replication site in Colorado Springs, Colorado is definitely up and running and a valuable facet of their Outreach Programs. On January 5-6, 2009, HillSprings lead teacher and trainer, Lori McCauley, and Hill Center presenter, Jean Neville, co-presented the second HillRAP workshop in Colorado Springs. The first workshop, including HillRAP and HillWrite, was offered June 9-13, 2008.
The effectiveness of the June workshops created interest in additional Hill Center training. As a result, Mr. Terry Martinez, principal of Washington Elementary School in District 11, hosted the HillRAP workshop for fourteen public school teachers from Washington Elementary, Taylor Elementary, and Buena Vista Elementary School. Four general educators, three special educators, one ELL, and six reading teachers comprised the group of participants. All of the teachers took the online course of “Phonics: Breaking the Code” before the HillRAP workshop. Several of the teachers were able to observe HillRAP teachers, Jennifer Martinez at Taylor Elementary, and Lori McCauley at HillSprings, prior to the workshop.
Role play and case studies were very key components of the workshop. Practice asking drill questions, marking responses, and reviewing assessment materials were instrumental in having teachers feel more comfortable implementing this methodology in their classrooms. Many teachers remarked that they wish this methodology were available throughout the school system. Another participant wrote on her evaluation, “After so many years of teaching, I’m so thrilled to get a gift of this amazing program. I feel secure in knowing that I will now give the appropriate instruction to well-deserved students. I am hungry for more.”
Lori McCauley is completing requirements to become a trainer-of-trainers in Hill Center Methodology. She will be conducting training in June 2009 for HillRAP, HillWrite, and HillMath for more teachers from the Colorado Springs area. The HillSprings Tutoring Connection now has six tutors and one HillRAP tutor. Currently, HillSprings has enrolled twenty-nine students in grades 2-10, representing 10 different schools. Seven of the twenty-nine students are homeschool students. Three full-time and four part-time teachers make up the HillSprings faculty. HillSprings’ website, www.hillsprings.org is linked to The Hill Center website.
In addition to the excellent academic program, the HillSprings Outreach Programs have expanded their status as a complete community resource center. All of us at The Hill Center are proud of the fine work that Charlie Tye, Director of HillSprings, and her staff are doing on behalf of students in both public and private schools in Colorado Springs.
